Exodus 15:20-21 – Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine, and all the women followed her with tambourines, dancing. Miriam led them in singing, Sing to God— what a victory! He pitched the horse and rider into the sea!
It’s no surprise that Miriam grabbed a tambourine (timbrel, drum) and beat it with all her might while dancing victoriously! She was a prophetess. Miriam gave incredible voice to how God had beaten down His enemies! HER ENEMIES!
Every stroke the Lord lays on them with his punishing club will be to the music of timbrels and harps as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm (Isaiah 30:32).
In this passage, Miriam was a PACESETTER! A pacesetter is a person who sets the pace for the rest of the team to follow, specifically in a race. Another definition of a pacesetter is a leader, one who is the first to do new or different things and so provides an example for others to follow.
It just took one person! Miriam could have allowed someone else to give God the applause He deserved. Instead, she responded first to the drum of God in her heart, unleashing to Him her highest praise! Others followed, sparking a beautiful celebration in the camp!
God is looking for pacesetters! Don’t wait on others to give Him the praise He SO deserves!
