Mark 4:5-6 – Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away.
Have you ever seen a flower pop up almost overnight from a crack in the sidewalk? It’s quite unfathomable to think how something beautiful squeezes itself up through dry, hard earth beneath the concrete’s surface. A reminder to us that hope blooms in unexpected places!
Rocky soil can produce immediate growth, but it will prove anemic. It can be the same when souls newly enter the Christian life. If they only have shallow, stony soil, when hard times come, they will not be able to adequately thrive in their walk with God.
Healthy, sustainable growth takes time. When reading The Parable of the Sower, Jesus explains that THE SEED is THE WORD OF GOD. In order to grow a strong root system in our life, we must saturate ourselves in God’s Word little by little, day by day. The Bible is ALIVE, meaning each time we read it, it’s breaking up stones in our soil, enabling us to grow deeper roots!
“Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” (Jer. 23:29).
Mike and I have such a heart to see the younger generation thriving in their daily walk with the Lord! Their enthusiasm and JOY to serve God is special; much like hope budding from the concrete! Our prayer is that they’ll grow strong, steadfast roots that ONLY abiding in Jesus produces. When problems or trials arise, they’ll be able to stay the course, run their race well, and gain the prize!
Let your roots GO DEEP!

If you’re new to the Bible and don’t know where to start, be encouraged! The Holy Spirit is available to lead you and help you understand what you’re reading! (The Gospel of John is a great place to begin, as is Psalm 119, which reveals the value of the word of God in our lives!)
If you’ve been a Christian for some time but struggle to stay immersed in the word, that’s normal! Engaging in a daily Bible reading plan has been the discipline I needed over the years to deepen my hunger and love for it! The walk of faith is not a sprint but a marathon. Your perseverance to stay in God’s Word will cultivate in you what the Bible calls GOOD SOIL, and before long, you’ll find yourself yielding fruit (some 30, 60, or even 100 times as much as was planted) for His Kingdom! Keep GOING!
